Winter Driving – How to Prevent Ice on the Windscreen of Your Car

There’s nothing more annoying than arriving back at your parked car, expecting to drive off immediately but due to a cold wintery day, finding it covered in a thick layer of ice, which then has to be removed. Even more irritating to me is witnessing what other drivers do about this situation. I have lost count of the number of times I have personally witnessed drivers set off, having cleared only a fraction of the ice from their vehicles’ windows, barely able to see out of their vehicles, let alone drive them! This is a dangerous but common practice, yet it doesn’t have to be like that. There are plenty of things you can do to prevent ice forming on the windscreen of your car, even when away from home; you just have to be made aware of your options.

Before we describe these methods please be aware, in the UK at least, that driving a vehicle covered in ice is in effect ‘driving without due care and attention.’ This means you may receive a fixed penalty ‘endorsable’ ticket from the police if stopped, a fine of £60 and 3 points on your driving licence. The police could also consider charging you with the offence of ‘dangerous driving’, depending on the circumstance of the incident. This would entail a court appearance and if found guilty, the court could impose an additional ‘hefty’ fine plus between 3 and 11 points on your driving licence. Don’t forget that you only have to reach 12 points on your licence for it to equate to an automatic driving ban for the offender. It’s obvious then that before you attempt to drive off, it is imperative that the iced up windscreen needs to be cleared, unless you want to incur the wrath of the law. But how can you achieve this easily and quickly, especially when you are in hurry? Well as the saying goes, prevention is better than a cure, so if you are able to plan ahead a little and implement any of the following measures, you will save yourself a lot of time, effort and stress in the first place!

Prevention strategies

Try and garage your car over night or park up under a car porch to prevent frost forming on the windscreen, especially if you have the facilities available. A fairly obvious strategy I know, but I am always amazed at how some people are just too lazy to put away the car in its proper place at night time! An extra benefit of garaging a vehicle at night time in order to avoid ice in the morning, is lower car insurance. Remember, if you state on your insurance renewal form that your car is left in a garage at night time, then you need to ensure that this regularly occurs, because if your car is stolen or damaged during the night and it isn’t in the garage, you may find that your insurance claim is void. No garage or car porch? Not a problem, you can buy a commercial windshield cover, which you put on the vehicle the night before frost is due. Prices on Amazon as at 5th January 2011, range from £4.99 to £24.99, depending on size. The great benefit of windshield covers are that they can be fitted in seconds, are extremely durable usually being made from 100% nylon, come in a variety of sizes from front windshield only to car roof top or full carcovers com, and offer good protection against both ice and snow. Windscreen covers are useful to have anyway, whether you have a garage or not, as being contained in their own bag, they can be kept neatly inside the vehicle at all times and used when you are out and about town on cold frost prone days as well as for use at home. A much cheaper alternative than buying a commercial windshield cover is making use of your old newspapers and magazines. These can be arranged over the front windscreen, again the night before frost is due, and can be ‘secured’ by your car’s windscreen wipers.

Reactive strategies when ice has already formed on the windscreen

Always keep a can of de-icer spray in the vehicle over winter time. This is useful to have when your windscreen washers are either frozen solid or empty depending on how much you have used them recently. Watch out for the tops of aerosol cans that have been moulded with a straight edge, you can use these as an ice-scraper as well. Always keep an ice-scraper handy in the vehicle. Prices on Amazon range from £1 to £19.99 depending on the type you want, single or double edged, with/without de-mister sponge and whether it is electrically heated or not.

Ensure that your vehicle is fully topped up with windscreen washer solution. In winter time it needs to be mixed at a fairly concentrated level so that it doesn’t freeze when your vehicle is left for any period of time. It is a good idea to start increasing the strength of the washer fluid in October of each year in anticipation of the winter months. It is also useful to keep some spare washer fluid in the boot, in case you run out, especially since you will find that you use more of it to keep your windscreen clean in winter time than in the summer. If you are at home, you could also try de-frosting the windscreen quickly in a morning, by using warm water, straight from the kettle. But please ensure that it is not too hot or boiling water as this could crack your windscreen when poured over it. I have been reliably informed that a bottle of salted water also does the trick and this can be kept in the car for when you are eventually mobile. Lastly, if you are busy dealing with de-frosting your vehicle on the outside then you may save yourself some time by starting your engine up and getting your windscreen heater working on the inside of your windscreen, because don’t forget this may need de-icing or de-misting as well.

However I would like to point out that if you intend to perform point number five, then you need to be aware of your surroundings and be in attendance with your vehicle at all times. Many opportune car thefts take place whilst drivers are ether away from their vehicles parked on the driveway of their home, with the keys still in the ignition or busy doing something else and not really paying attention to who is around at the time. If in doubt, perhaps because you do not know the area where you have parked your car that well, then do not practice this strategy at all, wait until you have cleared the outside of your vehicle and only start up the engine when you are safely sat inside, with the doors locked if necessary. As people add items to their shopping carts and place an order, a fast delivery option can be expected from Amazon. This implies that you need to update the inventory and make sure that the items aren’t available. As you plan ahead, it might be time-consuming for synchronizing inventory all by yourself. So, if you have a long list of car parts, then it’s essential to sync inventory automatically.

List the items accurately

As you choose Amazon for promoting car parts and accessories, you should check every product page. If you come across pages which depict poor quality, then you shouldn’t upload them. In the end, ensure that the items match to what Amazon likes listing through the website.

Check for the prices

Once you are successful in managing the inventory through a tool, then you should be consistent in maintaining the price. In case you need to stay ahead, then you can decide on the price only when you have checked the same product on different online portals. In this way, you would be able to sell the items at the right price even when an extensive range of items are showcased online.

Shipping cost

As you upload the product pages along with the description and the details, you should do it with great accuracy. See to it that your team doesn’t make a mistake in stating the dimensions and the weight of the car parts. While free shipping can entice people to purchase the product, you should be intelligent to drive everything with a shipping strategy that boosts the sales and covers up the cost.

Avail Amazon’s Buy Box

On websites like Amazon, you can list the products and make the ‘Ready to Buy’ box prominent. After all, you gain the advantage of featuring yourself as a seller on the online portal. Once the Buy Box is displayed on the web page, you can expect an increase in the sales. But, in order to be a seller, you first need to meet certain criteria laid down by Amazon. Finally, if you wish to be successful soon after proceeding with auto parts listing on Amazon, then it’s time to implement and streamline many processes. You can also use listing tools to make a few aspects of the process. A shipping software can also help when you integrate numerous systems for the comprehensive strategy you had thought about. Both my son and I were among the many people who received Amazon Kindle Fire tablet computers as Christmas gifts this year. We were both delighted with our new toys, but we both needed a cover for our Kindles. It’s important to use some kind of cover for your personal electronic devices – especially the ones with a touch screen. This can help to protect them from minor bumps and scrapes, which are almost inevitable, and it also provides you with a great way to personalize your device. There is certainly a wide selection of different covers to choose from. It shouldn’t be too difficult to find something which meets both your functional requirements and also your personal aesthetic needs. Here are a few of the things, in no particular order, that you should consider when choosing a case:

It should look good (to you). You’ll probably be seeing it a lot.

In addition to being good looking, your case should be hard wearing (unless you like the “distressed” look of course). It should be robust enough to protect your device against minor scrapes, knocks and bumps. If your case also acts as a stand when you’re using your device, that may be beneficial for you. The case you choose should allow unimpaired access to controls, USB ports, power inputs, etc. Those are just a few suggestions – you may have other criteria of your own. Maybe your case needs to be purple, or have a picture of Harry Potter on it. The good news is that there are so many different options available that you’re almost certain to find something to suit. These come in the form of inflatable cubes with a clear, liquid proof, pouch into which you may place your tablet. There are even “cases” in the form of inflatable cars (you position the Kindle in the steering wheel) – and these serve both to protect your tablet and to enhance any racing games. One thing that’s definitely worth pointing out before you choose your case, is the fact that the Kindle Fire 7″ and the Kindle Fire 7″ HD require different cases. They look very similar, but a Fire case will not accommodate a Fire HD – and vice versa. Choose the right case for your device and avoid the hassle of returns.
